They need infra red heat rays from the sun (or lamps) to provide deep penetrating IR heat for efficient thermoregulation and metabolism. Reptiles also need UVA light to both see and function properly. The lamp can be thermostatically controlled for safer use.Other requirements: Use a brighter, white coloured lamp for more daytime heat if required, such as the Komodo Neodymium Daylight Spot Lamp.
